FUNDING SOURCES AVAILABLE

UMSU provides event funding for student groups that are registered with us. UMSU fund a few internal sustainability initiatives such as fair trade coffee/tea at both their restaurant and their coffee/pool hall. Students fund $2.50 / year levy that goes to the University of Manitoba Recycling and Environmental Group (UMREG).

How does University of Manitoba go about running a levy?
UMSU generally sets its own fees and they have to be approved by the university Board of Governors once they’ve approved them, that’s largely a rubber-stamp. Changes to their fees (i.e. membership dues, endowment fund, etc.) are done via a majority vote at the governing UMSU Council.

The Health & Dental Plan was brought in via referendum in 2002, and has been altered over the years. In some years it is done via Council, other years simply by the Health & Dental Plan Committee.

New fees or changes to existing fees that go to external organizations are done via referendum. This currently includes the fees for the campus newspaper, the campus radio station, the aforementioned UMREG fee, membership fees to the Canadian Federation of Students and its affiliated organizations, and donations to World University Services Canada, World Wise, and Engineers Without Borders – Manitoba.

Students can fund just about whatever they want via a levy – a referendum on a new levy is initiated either by our Executive Committee (the elected President & VPs), or by a petition of 1,000 UMSU members. Typically they go to fund specific external organizations.

What are the varying amounts of levies, or where can I find them?
The full list of fees students pay can be found here: http://www.umsu.ca/about-umsu-umsumenu-2/student-fees-umsumenu-19
Students also pay a fee to their local Student Faculty Association and often times also to a joint university/student endowment fund that pays for various projects in that faculty. Those are available here: http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/fees/1501.htm
